Irish RevolutionariesThe Catalpa, the Fenians and The 1916 UprisingThere are two events in Irish history in which I have a special interest: this page is a part-time investigation into these events and some other pieces of information which I've found valuable in my research. IntroductionWhile working on the Fremantle Prison Web site, I happened across the story of the Fenians, and their daring escape on board The Catalpa. After hearing the story described in excerpts of 'Cashman's Diary' performed at the website launch, I knew that there was far more depth to this story: political intrugue, confidence tricks, international subterfuge, and some really lame Irish humour. I've also visited most of the key locations in the story, including Boston. I'd not heard the story before. There's no Hollywood movie based on the events. It was worth a closer look. I'd not learnt much about the 1916 Easter Rising before visiting Dublin (apart from what I'd learned in an episode of 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' based on the events, I'm ashamed to admit). While researching my Family Tree, I made a connection which might lead to one of the rebels who was executed for his part in the story. I'd not heard the story before. There's no Hollywood movie based on the events. It was worth a closer look. Related Links[an error occurred while processing this directive]
