Flavours Of The Month

Here are a few of the most recent 'Flavours Of The Month' at our place. Maybe you'll find inspiration, or you'll have a more specific reason to take pity on us. Either way, enjoy.

Movies

My Neighbour Totoro

My Neighbor Totoro
Recommended by The Family
We shared this one during the 2008 Perth International Arts festival on the foreshore in Applecross. Really cool, cute movie.

High School Musical

High School Musical (Encore Edition)
Recommended by The Kids
I'm not sure where this one has come from, but the kids already know all the songs! It looks like someone's tried to replace Grease with some decent songs and morals. It's not half bad, even by Disney standards.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (Widescreen Edition)
Recommended by The Kids and Dad
A sponge and a starfish discover what it means to be men. And Bubble Blowing Goofy Goobers.

The Parent Trap

The Parent Trap (Vault Disney Collection)
Recommended by Allanah
For some reason, Allanah loves this one, even though it's from 1961. One of her favorite Christmas presents.

Peter Pan

Peter Pan (Full Screen Edition)
Recommended by Allanah
It's really cool.

Spirited Away

Spirited Away
Recommended by David
Incredible, beautiful, amazing. Hugely popular in Japan, but unheard of here, even despite Disney's distribution. Similar to Alice in Wonderland, but with more style and class. Some scary bits, talk of spirits and eastern mythology, and some genuine weirdness going on, but beautiful animation and a great story about growing up.

Ice Age

Ice Age (2-Disc Special Edition)
Recommended by Caleb
Cool, man

Music

Wicked

Stephen Schwartz
Recommended by Everyone
We saw this in London - it lived up to its name.

Two Lefts Don't Make a Right.. But Three Do

Relient K
Recommended by Caleb
'Trademark' is pretty cool.

War Of The Worlds

Jeff Wayne
Recommended by David
I was introduced to this in the late 70s, and still think it's one of the greatest albums of our time.

War Of The Worlds Remixes

Jeff Wayne
Recommended by David
Some excellent reinterpretations in among some fairly average ones... The original is still the best, though.

Shine

Bond
Recommended by Ainslie
We're gonna get this one signed because Ainslie knows someone who knows Hailey. Whoo hoo. Dad/Poppa also likes Bond, even though he has no opinion on their violin playing.

Shrek 2 Soundtrack

Various Artists
Recommended by The Kids
Boy - if the kids can get into an old 70s track like 'FunkyTown' just because it's associated with this, how do I get 'Take On Me' into a kid's movie soundtrack?

Poodle Hat

"Weird Al" Yankovic
Recommended by everyone except Ainslie
Good silly fun.

Everything for Everyone

Barenaked Ladies
Recommended by Kids
Turn up the monkey song!

Books

Strategic Brand Management

Kevin Lane Keller
Recommended by David
Oooh, yeah - fascinating stuff. But if you're interested in what I do for a job these days, this is it.

Latin For All Occasions

Henry Beard
Recommended by David
When you're stuck for words, latin... is... really... good.

McCarthy's Bar

Pete McCarthy
Recommended by David
An entertaining travelogue around Ireland, similar to what I would have written about my own travels there, were I more daring, more skilled and funnier.

The Time Machine

H. G. Wells
Recommended by David
Every few years I need to reread this, 1984 and The War Of The Worlds to remind myself how brilliant the old sci-fi writers were - and still are.

Getting Things Done

David Allen
Recommended by David
There's irony in the fact that I'm trying to find time to read this one at the moment.

The Da Vinci Code

Dan Brown
Recommended by David
5 Stars. Brilliant

Stupid White Men

Michael Moore
Recommended by David
See it with Farenheit 911 with your brain switched on. It doesn't all hang together, but it's fun populist outrage at its finest.

Games

Kingdom Hearts II

Kingdom Hearts II
Recommended by The Kids
The second instalment (and hopefully not the last) of this excellent mash-up of the Square and Disney universes. Worth the wait.

We Love Katamari

We Love Katamari

More Japanese Madness. Who'd have thought rolling a sticky ball around the countryside could be so much fun?

Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X
Recommended by David and Caleb
There's no beating the Japanese for creativity and depth in designing computer games. This one is on a par with Kingdom Hearts for an enjoyable one-player experience.

Simpsons Hit and Run

The Simpsons Hit & Run
Recommended by The Kids
I'm surprised they've come up with such a good (albeit short) game based on such a huge franchise.

Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts
Recommended by David and Caleb
Eastern and Western imagination combined in a single epic interactive movie. This is what console gaming is all about.
